Photographing the Restricted Amsterdam Harbour

Not all photography field trips are comfortable. Today I took a group of photographers in the rain to photograph the restricted port areas of Amsterdam that have been abandoned or are closed to the public.

Photographing Lisbon for Shutterstock

Marquis of Pombal Square is an important hub for traffic and business in Lisbon. When searching for images of Lisbon on stock photography sites, it is easy to find old traditional streets, squares and trams. But little to no images of the more modern districts. Marquis of Pombal Square is located between the Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) and the Eduardo VII Park in the former parish of Coração de Jesus and in the quarter of Santo António.

Mastering Instagram for Photographers

Instagram expert Andrew Stripp from Amsterdam Canals and his team, Dutchie and Brian Sweet, shared their expert advice with the Amsterdam Photo Club on how you can get to over 60.000 Instagram followers without purchasing your likes. They also show us how photographers can best use Instagram to promote their portfolios and business, the basics of the app, best practices for personal and professional use, how to best engage and improving reach to new audiences. We’ll also got an inside look at how to best use hashtags, filters and cropping for smaller screens. We also helped those that were new to Instagram set up their account and did some practical exercises. A great event for those wanting to interact with other local Instagram users.

Cherry Blossoms

Photographing the Cherry Blossoms has become a annual event for the Amsterdam Photo Club. It is not the easiest event to plan, since they only bloom for a week or two. But definitively worth photographing.

Pillow Fight Day

Photographing the annual Pillow Fight Day is always fun. It is an excellent event for editorial photography. Though not without risk. Keeping a firm grasp on the camera, and shooting in fast speed is essential.

Look Up

Those interested in photography have most likely heard of the Nikon photo contest scandal last week. The winning entry “Look Up” by Singaporean photographer Chay Yu Wei turned out to be photoshopped. Though the photo was photoshopped, creating similar images is not that difficult without the use of Photoshop. Planes will depart and land in the same pattern  If you ever spot one plane landing in a nice framing while looking up, chances are that another plane (and another and another..) will fly through the exact same frame every 3 minutes.

Photographing Bahrain for Shutterstock

Bahrain is a great place for photographing cityscapes. The land with two seas located between Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Middle East has an impressing architecture, especially light up at night.

National Tulip Day

It is always fun photographing the opening of the Dutch tulip season, as National Tulip Day comes to town. . On this day everyone is invited to pick their own tulip for free from a specially constructed ‘picking garden’ at Amsterdam’s Dam Square! National Tulip Day brings Dutch tulip growers together for the creation of a massive temporary garden on Dam Square, bursting with around 200,000 tulips. More than 10,000 people come along to pick up their own free tulip.
